How to Bargain in Thai (What to Actually Say)

The whole negotiation is two words. แพงไป phaeng-bpai — "too expensive." Then ลดหน่อย lót-nàwy — "lower it a bit."

If they come down, you say เอา ao, I'll take it. If they don't, you say ไม่เอา mâi-ao and walk. That's the entire script.

The rule that matters more than the words

Say all of it with a smile. Bargaining in Thailand is a warm exchange, not a confrontation, and the tone you bring decides the price more than your vocabulary does. Grinning while you say phaeng-bpai reads as playing the game. Saying it with a hard face reads as an accusation, and the price stops moving.

This is the single biggest difference between travelers who get good prices and travelers who don't. It is not about being tough.

Where bargaining works, and where it doesn't

Markets, beach vendors, souvenir stalls, tuk-tuks and independent clothing rails: yes. Restaurants with printed menus, 7-Eleven, supermarkets, chain shops, pharmacies and anything with a cash register: no, and trying reads as strange.

Food carts sit in the middle. The price is the price, and haggling over a 50-baht plate of noodles is not a good look. Save it for objects.

Is walking away rude?

No. mâi-ao and a friendly nod is a completely normal way to end things, and it is often when the real price appears — you'll frequently hear a new number called after you. Walking away in silence, though, is colder than it needs to be. One word and a smile keeps it pleasant, and lets you come back tomorrow.

ao is bigger than shopping

เอา ao is one of the most useful words a beginner owns. It means take, want, have this one. Point at anything and say ao and you have bought it. ไม่เอา mâi-ao declines anything at all — the bag, the extra sauce, the tour, the man with the laminated menu. It is the polite refusal you will use ten times a day.

ถูก thùuk is cheap, and it's worth knowing mainly so you recognize it when a vendor uses it about their own prices.
