What to Say in a Thai Taxi or Tuk-Tuk

Say ไป (bpai) plus your destination, ask for มิเตอร์ (mí-dtêr), and stop with จอด ตรงนี้ (jàwt dtrong-níi). Six words for getting around Bangkok by taxi.

Getting in is easy. The sentence is ไป bpai — "go" — followed by where you want to go. bpai plus สนามบิน sà-nǎam-bin is "airport, please," and it works.

Getting out is the other half: จอด jàwt (stop, pull over) and ตรงนี้ dtrong-níi (right here).

Say mí-dtêr before you sit down

มิเตอร์ mí-dtêr is the meter, and the moment to say it is through the window, before you get in — not after the car has moved. One word with a questioning look is enough. If the driver agrees, you're on the meter. If he quotes a flat fare instead, you can take it or wave the next car; there is always a next car.

Once you are already in the back seat with your bags, your negotiating position is gone. That is the entire trick, and it is worth more than any phrase here.

jàwt dtrong-níi — the two words to have ready

Thai drivers will often stop exactly where you say and nowhere else, so have jàwt dtrong-níi loaded a few seconds before you want it rather than shouting it as you pass the door. On a busy road, pointing while you say it removes all ambiguity.

dtrong-níi on its own — "right here" — also works for a hundred other things: this seat, this table, this spot on the map.

What does rót-dtìt mean when the driver says it?

รถติด rót-dtìt is a traffic jam, and you will hear it constantly. Sometimes it's an explanation for the route he's taking, sometimes it's why he doesn't want your fare, sometimes it's just conversation about the state of the world.

It is genuinely useful to recognize, because a driver saying rót-dtìt and shaking his head at your destination is telling you something real about the next hour of your life. In Bangkok at 5pm, that's information you can act on — the train may be sitting right above the jam.

Tuk-tuks are a different transaction

There is no meter in a tuk-tuk. The price is agreed before you get in, out loud, and it is usually higher than a metered taxi for the same distance. That's fine if you want the ride; just know you're buying the experience, not the transport, and settle the number first.
